These were done october 2010 for the Lord of the Rings Living Card Game. I saw them online at the FFG site so I'm guessing its safe to put them up.

My work process has changed a few times in the last year. These are pretty typical of my process in the months following college graduation. The first few months of 2011 I was working with multiple brushes and drawing in greyscale and applying color after the illustration was finished. Since April I have been working in full color with limited brushes.

I decided to attend draw night at Nobrow coffee today as I haven't drawn once in the last two weeks. I made this monster by trying to solve a mess of scribbles I made. It's a good way to sketch when you aren't feeling creative.

Here are some commissions for a videogame my friend Raj and Drew are making. I was very excited when I heard the premise of the game and I'm glad they asked me to help out. The top two images are of a zombie child at stage 1 and 2 of the viral mutation. The bottom two are of the player character.

They are looking for some talented 3d modelers to help out, so if you have any recommendations let me know!

It's refreshing for me to get some work out that isn't under NDA. It will still be a few months before the work I did back in October is published.

One of my new years resolutions is to complete the Bargue drawing course. These are the feet, the next section is hands.

The first 6 plates. Plate 8 was done this summer. Most of these were done without measuring and not at size. I'm not concerned with perfection on these, I would rather spend an hour or two to get the values correct than 100 to make it perfect.

It started to snow while I was driving back from Provo tonight. By the time I reached American Fork it was a certifiable blizzard. I'm not ready for winter, but I really like seeing snow up on the mountains.

Going to keep working on my landscape speed paintings. One of these days they'll stop looking like bad Whit Brachna knockoffs.

I decided to do something before I went to bed tonight. When I do these studies I try to keep them under an hour and always from life. Painting from life, even if it is digitally, is lots of fun. I work faster and am more accurate when I draw from photos, but I usually like the end result more when I draw from life.

Sargent Portrait Studies

I have been encouraged by Sean Diediker to study John Singer Sargent's drawing methods.
These two copies are 18x24 inches. The next step is to rope some poor model into doing a sitting for me. It seems that I only post studies up on the blog these days, but be assured that I am doing illustration work. I will be able to show it off once it is published.

NYCC was totally amazing. Saw alot of the RIT crew again, saw tons of cool stuff. Lots of good advice and inspiration. Some illustrator highlights were meeting Scott Altmann , David Palumbo, Mark Evans, Peter Chan, and many others.

I am in NYC all of this week with Arthur. We checked out Big Apple Comicon this last weekend which turned out to be a bust. We did meet an illustrator named Cojo who gave us prints of "hipster batman" and some cool advice on getting into the editorial biz. We also scored a bunch of free magic card starter decks.

My understanding is that there is a lot of competition for character design jobs in the industry. However, in my job searching I have found lots of companies looking to hire character artists. While character design is not an ultimate goal, I wouldn't mind having a character portfolio. This was my first attempt, I found it challenging but enjoyable.

More accurate than the face but the ankle is tilted a little too much to the right. The bottom of the foot is pretty close to being accurate which I'm very pleased about.

My first attempt at a Bargue plate. I'm not going to overlay the original over it because I've already found many inaccuracies. These are probably because I'm doing this in my sketchbook and not on the same surface. The whole process is time consuming but very rewarding.
